How forensic fire investigation helped identify the likely cause of a catastrophic caravan fire.
When a fire causes extensive destruction, determining the origin and cause can be challenging. The damage may be severe, physical evidence may be compromised, and multiple potential ignition sources may be present.
In this matter, Forensic Origin & Cause Investigations was engaged to conduct an independent investigation into the origin and cause of a fire involving a caravan. The fire caused catastrophic damage, with much of the caravan reduced to its lower body panels.
The purpose of our investigation was to determine, where possible, where the fire originated and what most likely caused it.
Background
At the time of the incident, a portable power station was reportedly being charged inside the caravan. The unit was connected to a power outlet in the kitchen.
Shortly after charging commenced, unusual sounds were reportedly heard from the caravan. Flames were then observed in the same general area.
By the time the fire was extinguished, the caravan had sustained significant fire damage.
Scene examination
Although the caravan was heavily damaged, the remaining fire patterns and physical evidence were sufficient to help identify the likely area of origin. The damage indicated that the fire originated inside the caravan, in the kitchen and living area.
Further excavation of the fire debris identified substantial battery remains within this area. These included numerous battery cells exhibiting thermal failure, together with remains consistent with the portable power station casing and associated electrical components.
The location of these remains was significant because they were identified within the area of origin and were consistent with the reported location of the battery while it was on charge.
Consideration of potential causes
As part of the investigation, a number of potential ignition scenarios were considered, including deliberate ignition, electrical failure associated with the caravan, solar-related electrical failure, and battery-charging failure.
No evidence was identified to support deliberate ignition. The available evidence supported the conclusion that the fire most likely originated in the kitchen and living area of the caravan and was caused by an electrical failure associated with the portable power station while it was charging.
Why was the evidence important
In a fire investigation, conclusions must be based on the available evidence rather than assumptions.
In this case, the key evidence included the reported timeline of the portable battery being placed on charge before the fire, the observation of flames in the same general area, fire patterns indicating an internal origin in the kitchen and living area, and the identification of battery cells and associated components within the area of origin. Together, these findings provided an evidence-based explanation for the fire.
Outcome
The investigation assisted the client by providing an independent forensic opinion regarding the likely cause of the fire.
Rather than leaving the matter as an unexplained or undetermined loss, the physical evidence indicated a cause related to the portable power station while it was being charged.
This allowed the client to progress the matter with a clearer understanding of what had occurred and why.
